SSA 27

Special Service Area 27 (SSA 27) works to make Lakeview a neighborhood where people wish to live, linger, and long to return. It provides resources to local businesses and residents, such as:

• Daily Sidewalk Cleaning
• Facade Improvement Incentives
• Access to a Successful Shopping Rebate Program, SHOP Lakeview
• Placemaking initatives like our Street Banner Program and way finding signage
• The Procurement and Maintenance of Street Benches, Bike Racks, Trash Cans, and Planters
• Commercial Vacancy Tracking

A special service area (SSA) is a property tax levy allocated from the City of Chicago that uses the taxes collected for service, beautification, and other programs within the SSA boundaries. A State of Illinois statute determines the restrictions and guidelines of the SSA. SSA 27 was formally established in December 2003, since then the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce has administerd the SSA 27 programs as the sole service provider. A Board of Commissioners is appointed by the Mayor to recommend the annual tax rate and sole service provider of the SSA. Lakeview Area Master Plan (LAMP)

The Lakeview Chamber and SSA #27 sponsored the Lakeview Area Master Plan (LAMP) in 2010 to develop a vision plan to strengthen Lakeview. The LAMP process involved resident and shop­per surveys; business and property owner surveys; open houses; a youth focus group; a website www.thisislakeview.com; district analysis; and demographic research.

The LAMP research uncovered opportunities, vital statistics, comparative data, and consumer data to help us better understand the business district. Its work plan and execution strategies will provide a blueprint for us to make improvements that will increase lo­cal shopping, as well as attract new customers and new businesses to Lakeview.
